Watkinsville First Christian Church – What an Operation!
Summary: The annual Chicken Mull fundraiser at the Watkinsville First Christian Church parking lot on the corner of Main Street and Simonton Bridge Road on Saturday, December 6, 2008 was somewhat unique. About 75 men, women and children of all ages met to set up for cooking 1,350 lbs of hens to make a mull like you’ve never tasted before to sell to the public. There was no “boss” shouting directions.

A Surge in Interest in the November Election
September 30, 2008
Summary: The primary election in Oconee County was spirited with a segment of the local electorate showing some disappointment in some elected officials in the present county administration by supporting Sarah Bell (she lost by only 100 votes) for Commission Chairman and putting Commissioner Don Norris out of office. The 3 other Commissioners withstood strong opposition from fellow Republicans. For the Board of Education, one Democrat ran for a Post.
Afterwards, a calm covered the electorate until a few weeks later when Senator John McCain announced Alaska Governor Sara Palin as his Vice President running mate. And now, the excitement guage is off the chart. |

Bethel United Methodist Church Annual Revival and Homecoming 9-14-08 |
| Posted by: Kate on 09/28/2008 10:27 AM (Read: 261) |
Summary: In the late 1700s, the colonists settling on the east coast did not have the luxury of huge spacious buildings in which to meet and hold religious services, so they met in their homes or under a large shady centrally located tree. So it was today, under the shade trees behind the church, young and old, immediate and extended family met to celebrate their church, their memories, and life's blessings with a taste of good southern cooking. It was also the beginning of Revival.
Quote: "I remember when services were held by light from lanterns." |

Last Meeting with NBAF Officials at UGA Mahler Auditorium Brings Out Hundreds to Have Their Say
Thursday, August 14, 2008
Summary
Two sessions were held: one at 12:30pm to 4:30pm and one at 6:00pm to 10:00pm. About 250 people attended each session. Three panelists gave a short presentation after which about 20 minutes were given to members of the audience to question them. They gave their answers. Then the public comment period began in which some 60 people (total) stood at the mike and made their points. Instructions were given for speakers to direct their comments to the panel of 3 (a representative from each of the agencies: USDA, NBAF and EIS Committee). Name and affiliation of each speaker was an option and so some comments below were not identified. All comments which were limited to within 3 minutes each, “were recorded and will be considered within the final Environmental Impact Study document to be published in the fall of 2008 along with the choice of location.” My comments are given at the end of this document. |

Housing Slump Hit Neighbors Hard
Friday, February 29, 2008
(From RealTrack.com) The number of homes facing foreclosure jumped 57 percent in January compared to a year ago, with lenders increasingly forced to take possession of homes they couldn't unload at auctions, a mortgage research firm said Monday. (See info below for Oconee County).
Nationwide, some 233,001 homes received at least one notice from lenders last month related to overdue payments, compared with 148,425 a year earlier, according to Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc. Nearly half of the total involved first-time default notices.
The worsening situation came despite ongoing efforts by lenders to help borrowers manage their payments by modifying loan terms, working out long-term repayment plans and other actions.
"You have more people going into default and a higher percentage of the properties going back to the banks," said Rick Sharga, RealtyTrac's vice president of marketing.
The U.S. foreclosure rate last month was one filing for every 534 homes. Rounding out the top 10 states with the highest foreclosure rates were California, Florida, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, Georgia, Connecticut, Ohio and Michigan. |

A big arch of red balloons opened for each contestant to enter and greet the audience. Later on into the evening, 5 performers gave their all and the winners were chosen by the number of votes given by the attendants. Their performances were precious.

| Posted by: Kate on 02/21/2008 05:13 PM (Read: 1432) |
Oconee County C&B members came out early on Saturday as they do each February to be ready for the public to come by their location and pick up a free tree - a Dogwood this year from the Georgia Forestry Department.
Small seedlings, muddy roots, muddy water, plastic gloves, plastic bags, ties, scissors, hot coffee, doughnuts and good socializing.
Monica Ali was in charge of the project this year. She and C&B member gave out about 500 dogwoods in about 1 1/2 hours. The number of trees is multiplying in Oconee County - thanks to another project by your Oconee County Clean & Beautiful Commission. |

Look Closely at Education Tax Proposal
by Sis Henry, executive director, Georgia School Boards Association
Note: Reprinted in full from the Walker County Messenger.
Map: Walker County (northwest corner) and Oconee County Highlighted.
Dear editor:
This legislative year, there will be numerous tax plans proposed in the Georgia General Assembly promising tax reform. Be leery of the six-second soundbite, which may be enticing, but at a closer look may be seriously and fatally flawed. In some instances, what may appear as a tax cut is actually a tax shift. For some elderly who are already exempt from school taxes, some proposals would actually mean a tax increase. |
