Chamber Starts New Year With New President - 7-2009

Summary: The Chamber sent out an invitation to all members to attend an Informational Meeting for Thursday, July 30 to meet the new President, JR Whitfield and to hear of the many committees and sub-committees that carry out the work of the Chamber. After the Chairs of these committees concluded their descriptions of the work and made a plea for volunteers, attendees were served refreshments while mingling and getting to know each other. The meeting was held in the meeting room in the basement of the Chamber Office on Nancy Drive adjacent to AmeriPride off Experiment Station Road.

Education - projects are the STAR Student Breakfast at which the selected students from the 5 high schools and their selected STAR Teachers are recognized.
Mentoring - citizens volunteer to mentor students at all schools where the need exists.
Youth Leadership - a group of sophomores and juniors are enrolled for the year's course to learn about civic and governmental organizations in the county.
Leadership Oconee - a group of adult citizens who wish to expand their leadership qualities are taken through a monthly schedule of visits to various entities in the county and to classes to improve their leadership skills during the year-long course.
Oconee Fall Festival - Volunteers are needed to plan, take applications and conduct the annual festival at Rocket Field and around the Court House Annex each year.
Farm Day: All Oconee 5th graders are taken in 5 bus loads to the Campbell Research Center on Experiment Station Road to observe 7 stations of environmental and agricultural displays.
Membership: Events that highlight what the Chamber can do for its membership are scheduled throughout the year such as Morning Coffees, ribbon cuttings, After Hours Networking and Chamber Ambassadors.
Farm/City Tour: - winning students of an "Ag Career" essay contest are recognized along with their parents at a luncheon after a tour of a segment of the farm community and a city business in the county.
After the meeting, business cards were exchanged. A few of the businesses that were represented at the meeting were: Athens Micro Computer (Sam Horner), Conflict Mediator (Alex Harlow), American Pest Control (Becky Finney), AmeriPrise Financial Services (Robert Watkins and Coleman Benko) and Piedmont Impressions (Jonathan King).
