Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission
Celebration & Retirement Reception
Summary: John McNally loved Oconee County with over 30 years of dedicated service, 18 of them as the leader of the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission (KOCBC). The County gave him a reception to celebrate years to make the county a better place to live, work and play.
Quote: The famous poster of an Indian Chief crying (a tear rolling down his cheek) at the litter abuse of the environment will no longer be crying about litter in Oconee County.” - John McNally

* The event was held in the Oconee Civic Center on Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 pm with about 35 friends, family and members attending. Reception included a beautiful center table laced with a variety of finger food (coordinated by Esther Porter and decorated with green and pale yellow bouquets of flowers on center table and each of 8 round tables (catered by D&S Creative Designs (Doug & Sharon Ivey). A 1-hour impressive video (created by Gold Group Tech - Dan McDaniel - Watkinsville) featured the life of John and his Commission members and all the KOCBC projects directed and activated over the past 18-years by John and the group.
* The video was shown throughout the afternoon with many guests halting their conversations to watch – some photos dating back (including first members of the Commission) to its inception in 1991 and being shown publically for the first time.
* County Commission Chairman Melvin Davis highlighted John’s many accomplishments before he was hired as the Director. Davis stated that John was instrumental in the building of the present Oconee Chamber Office on Nancy Drive off Experimentation Station Road when he was president of the organization in 1974 and their meeting place was the Eagle Tavern. He reminded that the Athens Chamber of Commerce designated John the Regional Volunteer of the Year in 1982. He was also instrumental in removing a few old dead trees from the front of the courthouse and replacing with new trees which have now grown to a nice shady umbrella. Davis listed numerous other accomplishments after taking the helm at KOCBC.
* Davis then presented John with a timeless attractive clock housed in plexi-glass and platinum (about 10 inches tall) inscribed appropriately which he accepted and told the story of the crying Indian Chief.
* John’s family, a daughter and her husband and son and a son and his wife came a distance to celebrate with him. Ex-officio members of the KOCBC were present as will as County Manager Alan Theriault and County Commissioner Chuck Horton. Oconee Enterprise Newspaper Publisher Vinnie Williams and her daughter, OE Manager Maridee Williams made an appearance. Current members of the KOCBC attended: Esther & David Porter, Monica Ali (husband Flynn), Nancy Ahbol, Simon Garrett (lovely wife), Ira Ruhmel, Mary Mellein, Kate McDaniel (husband Mac), Penny Mills and Susan Harris (husband Bob). And many friends.
* Positive compliments flew around the room all afternoon referring to John’s accomplishments, the food, the decorations and the video.
* The KOCBCommission will continue as before with a few minor changes and Esther Porter in the position as Director. Mary Mellein is the current Chairperson. The Commission has one vacancy seat which is being advertised to fill.
