Summary: Republican Women are back. With the current direction that the Congress and the White House is taking this country, Denise Beall and a handful of other like minded women felt strongly that they could not sit by without becoming involved so a charter club of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women was born in Oconee County a few months ago. The call themselves the Oconee Regional Republican Women or ORRW.
Quote: “I voted, paid my dues and donated money to political campaigns and I thought I was doing all that was needed or required of me. But now, I know I can do more, I must do more and I must help others get involved in the political process.” - Denise Beall, President. Check Out Our New Site at www.aPVOC-GA.com
Dr Paul Hartman presented at the October meeting with a riveting message to all to let our voices be heard because this country’s leaders are so radical that many people are stunned at what is going on now in the nation’s capitol.
He said that practicing medicine with Medicare and Medicaid was a nightmare, so much so that he left the medical profession to teach at UGA and that the government option –essentially, an entitlement program would bankrupt our nation. He commended the group for starting the club in the region and expressed wishes for success.
Jay Hanley, Chair of the Oconee Republican Party presented at the November meeting in which he gave a brief history of the party since 1988 when it was created. The he made a pitch for the 2 organizations to work together to enhance the awareness of basic beliefs of the Republican Party in the county and in surrounding counties.
A discussion ensued concerning the Fort Hood, TX tradegy - breaking news that happened just before the meeting started. A soldier, Major Nidal Hasan, M.D., a Muslim, opened fire on a group of soldiers readying for deployment to Afganistan and killed 11 and wounded 31. President Denise asked for a moment of silence to pray for the victims and their families.
Despite the tradegy, the group rejoiced in the recent election results in the Virginia (Bob McDonnell) and New Jersey (Chris Christi) Governor's races - both are Republicans. It probably means bad news for the Democrats in 2010.
Historically, the Federation of Republican Women at the state and national level has been a force to successfully elect Republicans since the original organization was chartered in 1957. President Eisenhower credited the Georgia Federation with carrying the state of Georgia for him in his presidential election.
The core of the club is a belief in the following
*** The strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.
*** In equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.
*** Free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.
*** The government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.
*** The proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least.
*** The most effective, responsive government is government closest to the people.
*** Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.
*** Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.
*** The Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
Activities in which the group is involved:
*** Caring for America - Encourages volunteerism and private sector initiatives at the local, state and national levels
*** Support Our Troops - Encourages local clubs and members to show support for the Armed Forces by engaging in projects that aid our U.S. troops and their families
*** Education and Literacy - A series of programs that promote education and literacy in our nation’s communities
*** Patriotism - Resources, links and program ideas designed to help Federation members raise awareness of flag protocol and promote patriotism in their communities
*** Mamie Eisenhower Library Project (MELP) - Fosters Republican philosophy and ideas through the donation of related books to libraries, schools, hospitals and other institutions
The group added 11 new members making a total of 31.
