Guest Speakers & Updates & Lively Discussion
Summary: Next year is the Mid Term Elections. The party has been hosting candidates for the various offices that will be up for election. Tonight Gerry Purcell, candidate for Insurance Commissioner presented his platform. Then the Chairman of the Georgia Teen Republicans spoke to us about recruiting Teens to work in the upcoming election. After great discussions, various conservative groups gave updates on their recent activities to inform the public to get more involved in the next election.
Quote: ”I will no longer be silent.” – Terry Fohey Oconee Businessman * It was a brisk night and enthusiasm was in the air – a Thanksgiving dinner and a packed interesting Agenda. A lot of greetings and networking took place during the meal among friends and first time acquaintance.
* Insurance Commissioner Candidate Gerry Purcell delivered his platform for improving the office. Said he felt that Georgians wanted a leader in the office that possessed 3 goals: 1) a vision, 2) innovative ideas and 3) competition.
* He would lobby the Georgia Legislators to pass a law that would allow the consumer to purchase insurance across state lines. Georgia has 11,195 company profiles for Insurance Companies, but no competition from outside the state. Companies won’t set up business here because it’s too expensive. They are a closed market and keep premiums high.
* He would advocate for customers to be allowed to get insurance with any company in the U S to keep prices down. He would also post expenditures of the office online for customers to read, stay current and comment.
* He would also be a partner in filing a lawsuit in federal court if Obama signs a national health care bill that mandates (forces) citizens to purchase medical insurance.
* Trey O’Callahan, a 17 year old young man who was elected to Chair the Georgia Teen Republicans this year gave insight into how teens view the political scene. They can be motivated easily, do the hard foot work (have lots of free time) and would be an asset to the local, state and national party, he said.
* He was asked several questions about how the Republican does not seem to be as savvy with the latest technology for communications (e-mail, YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, FaceBook, etc) as the Democrats. He reminded that the Obama won many of his votes with the 18 to 30 year-old eligible voters who love to use the latest technology.
